Xiaomi Mi4i Review – After using for 2 months
After the success of Mi4, Xiaomi launched Mi4i which is the slightly bumped down version of its predecessor, the Xiaomi Mi4. The phone was released on april 2015 with the new MIUI 6 which is based on Android Lollipop. This device was not a flagship product of Xiaomi but yes, definitely a great buy. I have been using this device since 2 months and I’m gonna tell you everything about this phone, why you should buy and why you should not buy this device. Well, let’s find out, in this Xiaomi Mi4i review.
The phone has a different design from its predecessor and has a matte polycarbonate body instead of the aluminium frame and glossy back cover panel of Mi4. The design and looks are really great, it is quite similar to the basic Xiaomi smartphones.
Build Quality & Design
On the front, it has a 5.0 MP front facing camera and a physical LED notification light on the right to the front camera and Mi logo on the left to it. You can set the LED notification light as pulse notification light, also you can choose between seven different colors from the settings. Below the display, you’ll find three capacitive buttons, similar to mostly Xiaomi smartphones. The power button is present below the volume rocker keys on the right side of the phone and on the left side of the phone is dual sim slot.
On the back, it has a 13 MP rear camera along with dual LED flash. The back design of Xiaomi Mi4i looks similar to iPhone 5C. Due to the similar design, there was a large amount of negative feedback from the users of iPhone 5C. On the top, it has a 5.5mm headphone jack and micro USB port at the bottom.
Overall the design and look of Xiaomi Mi4i is definitely a premium one. The matte polycarbonate body makes it more appealing than its predecessor, the Xiaomi Mi4.
It is much thinner and lighter than Mi4. Mi4i weigh around 130 gms and is only 7.8mm thick as compared to Mi4 which is a slightly bulky weighing around 149 gms. The curved edge of Xiaomi Mi4i makes it more appealing and comfortable. There would be no problem using this phone with one hand. Also, as per my point of view, 5 inch screen size is the best screen size one could get.
Now coming to the display of Xiaomi Mi4i. It has 5 inch sharp/JDI display that features 1080p resolution that results in 441 ppi (pixels per inch). The display is fantastic and gives better colour quality and contrast. The colour produced by this device is very accurate. It also uses hardware-level technology and so-called “Sunlight Display” which increases the readability even in bright sunlight conditions. It is also powered with Corning OGS (One Glass Solution) glass that protects the screen from accidental damage and provide resistance to scratches.
It features full HD display, 1920 x 1080 pixels. The colors reproduction and viewing angles are very great in Xiaomi Mi4i. It has a sharp 5 inch full HD display with 178° viewing angle with IPS technology. The colour reproduction at different angles are great. Overall the display quality and design is excellent. No other brand could afford to provide this type of display in this price range.
Xiaomi Mi4i is powered with 64-bit, 2nd Gen 1.7 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor with 2 GB of RAM. The gaming experience is so far good but not up to the mark. The device could lag several times during multitasking. Yes, the phone would lag during heavy usage. I don’t know what’s the reason behind it may be it is due to the low available memory. As on the first boot you’ll get around 900 mb-1 GB available RAM, that would be dropped down to 500 mb or so after installing some apps.
The phone will come with MIUI 6 out of the box and you can update it to MIUI 7 right away, the update is around 900 mb. I can assure you that the device doesn’t over heat even with excessive gaming. There are tons of review about the heating problem of this phone, but I haven’t found the phone to over heat. Maybe that’s because of the MIUI update. You won’t find this problem if you update it to MIUI 7. So I strongly recommend you to update your Mi4i to MIUI 7. You can update it from “system updates” in the Settings menu.
Xiaomi Mi4i has 16 GB of internal storage out of which 12.77 GB is user available. There is no expandable storage in Mi4i, that’s the biggest CON of this phone, though it supports USB OTG to expand the memory via USB OTG pen drive or through OTG cable. But there is no external memory card slot. If you can manage with 16 GB of memory then this phone is just for you.
I have had an AnTuTu Benchmark test on Xiaomi Mi4i both in Performance Mode and Balanced Mode. It gave around 37547 Score in Performance mode and the Score dropped down to 32680 when tested in Balanced mode. The results are quite satisfactory, though the company claims the score to be around 40000. This score beats the Antutu score of many flagship phones like One Plus One, Xperia Z Ultra, Galaxy Note 3, HTC One. So overall you’ll get an excellent performance.

Xiaomi Mi4i is a dual sim phone, both the sim are 4G LTE enabled. Both the sim slots are micro sim slots, you’ll have to insert micro sim to get it to work. The call quality is pretty impressive, no disturbance in the call quality. You’ll be more than happy with that. The output quality from the primary speaker on the back of the phone is great. The audio output is not distorted even at highest volume.
Now coming to the Camera quality, Mi4i has 13.0 MP rear camera with dual LED Flash. The picture quality of rear camera is excellent. The shutter speed is amazing, it also comes with an f/2.0 aperture and innovation tech to adapt all types of situations. The interesting thing is, it has a two-tone flash that assesses the room’s color temperature to replicate natural lighting. So far I am completely happy with the Camera quality of Xiaomi Mi4i. You can see the pictures taken with the rear camera of my Mi4i. In low lightning conditions, the two-tone flash can intelligently assess room color temperature to emulate natural lightning.

Xiaomi Mi4i has 5.0 MP front facing camera with auto focus, though you can also make use of manual focus also. The front camera quality if too great. You won’t find the pixels to be distorted. The front camera has also a in-built beautify tool that enhances the quality of selfies. Trust me you’ll love playing with the front camera, it’s really amazing.

Overall camera quality is pretty amazing. The device takes great photos. The camera UI is similar to that of Xiaomi Smartphones, you won’t find any difference. Considering the price range, you won’t find such camera quality as of Xiaomi Mi4i. A 10 on 10 for Camera quality. Pretty Amazing.
Xiaomi Mi4i is powered with huge 3120 mAh built-in Lithium-ion polymer battery. The battery is non removable. The design is really impressive, the device is just 7.8 mm thick and has 3120 mAh battery. The battery is powered with Quick Charge technology, charges up to 40% in an hour. But Quick charging means Quick discharging, as the device has 1080 p display the battery also drains fast. But you can easily manage a full day with this 3120 mAh battery of Xiaomi Mi4i.

Similar to all Xiaomi Smartphones, Xiaomi Mi4i has in-built software that gives you more privacy and features. You can hide inbox messages, lock individual apps, etc. So far I haven’t found any major bug in this phone, though the phone would lag sometime. The phone will come with Android 5.0 out of the box and the expectations are made that the phone would receive official Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) update soon.
